Mountain of the Dead

The Mountain of the Dead is one of the ancient cemeteries in Siwa Oasis, about 2 km away from the city center. It is called the Mountain of the Dead because it is a rocky hill that contains more than 2,000 tombs carved in the rock, and most of the tombs are dedicated to the burial of several people.

The burial began in the cemetery of the Mountain of the Dead in the 26th dynasty, based on the oldest cemetery discovered, which is the cemetery of “Pa thoth”, a cemetery that still preserves some colorful scenes on its walls, and the burial continued there until the end of the Roman era in Egypt.

There are three other important tombs in the cemetery of the Mountain of the Dead because they contain colorful scenes, and they are tombs dating back to the Greek era. These tombs are:

  • Tomb of Si Amun
  • Tomb of Misu Isis
  • Crocodile tomb

The tomb of Si Amun is considered the most important tomb in the cemetery of the Mountain of the Dead and in Siwa in general. It contains very beautiful scenes in bright colors, and one of the most important features of Si Amun’s tomb, artistically and historically, is that it combines Egyptian and Greek arts.
